The Phunkmob





A driving pulse with interplays of improvisatory rhythms - The Phunk Mob is the brainchild of drummer John Ashley Thomas,whose credits includes working with Grammy award-winning flautist Nestor Torres alongside the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and also the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra He has also toured the prestigous Blue Note circuit in Japan with Motown legends The Three Degrees, and played at numerous jazz and music festivals around the world including Arts Alive! in South Africa, Hua Hin international jazz fest in Thailand, Taichung international jazz fest in Taiwan, Jazz Yatra in India, Mosaic Music Fest in Singapore, Mont Kiara Jazz Fest, Penang Island Jazz Fest, Kuching international jazz fest in Borneo, Kota Kinabalu international jazz fest in Borneo, Chjimes jazz fest in Singapore, Genting international jazz fest and Jarasum International Jazz Fest in South Korea. Phunk Mob was formed in mid 2006 and boasts a stellar line-up of Malaysias finest young jazz musicians including Tok Khon aka TK on the keys, Fly on bass, and Wan aka Gigi on guitar.

Back to about 10 years ago, Zainal, who was a member of popular rock group "Head Wind" left the band and started his career as solo. The first his solo album released in 1991, "Zainal Abidin" took the world by storm, with its lyrics conveying message such as "Hijau" singing about environmental issue, and also with its original and unique sound mixing rock'n' roll and Asia African traditional music.
Since then he continued his energetic effort releasing albums with new concepts, while doing national tour or participating in music festivals abroad.
